Two assailants on a motorcycle attached a magnetic bomb to the car of an Iranian university professor working at a key nuclear facility, killing him and another person Wednesday, state TV reported. The slayings suggest a widening covert effort to set back Iran's atomic program.

The attack in Tehran bore a strong resemblance to earlier killings of scientists working on the Iranian nuclear program. It is certain to amplify authorities' claims of clandestine operations by Western powers and their allies to halt Iran's nuclear advances.

The blast killed Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a chemistry expert and a director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, state TV reported. State news agency IRNA said Roshan had "organizational links" to Iran's nuclear agency, which suggests a direct role in key aspects of the program.

"YOUR CAR CALL" -Harry Douglas

Hey Harry, I bought a new car in March 2010 from a dealership in Maryland. The car has had multiple issues ever since we bought it. The vehicle has been back to the Dealer five times for a total of 45+ days for repair that were mostly technical issues.

The main problem is with multiple warning lights (Airbag, ABS, Brake, Parking Brake and Traction Control); which occurred three separate times in three months. From what I have been told, this issue alone deems the car Lemon under the Maryland lemon law.

Could you please confirm that that this is true? If so, what should my first step be? Should I send a letter asking the dealership to repair the problems, buy back the vehicle at the price I paid or more? What are my rights? Also, should I include in the letter that this is a Lemon Car case?

I need some guidance on this issue. Thanks in advance for your help! -Sam

Go straight to the owners manual and get the manufactures Toll-Free number. Tell them your problem with their vehicle that you purchased. They will ask for your service tickets so have those ready. Request a meeting with their Regional Service Manager.

This sounds like a simple reset of the vehicles on-board computer. I can't understand why the Dealerships service department cannot handle it. If that computer is faulty it would show up when they scope-it-out.

Hey Harry, I have a bit of an issue. A few months ago, I put my car up "for sale by owner." I had someone come for the car, they did not have cash but had a check. I took the check but did not hand over the pink slip of the car until the check cleared. However the person that gave me the check took the car and was to return the next day for the pink slip once the check cleared. Long story short the check never cleared and this person never returned with my car. I have gone to the authorities who say they cant do anything. This person still has my car. Is there any legal action I can take against this person? I have not been able to find anything out and I feel completely lost! I know it was my mistake to take the check and let him take the car, but lesson learned. -Deanna

I think that I have this straight, you offered your car "For Sale." You had a person who came and looked at your car and decided to purchase this car from you. The buyer wrote you a check and took ownership of the car. By "Pink Slip" I assume you are referring to the state issued title. The check was bad but the person never returned to make that check good or return the car to you.

By a "authorities" I take that to mean the Police. This is a pure and simple case of "Larceny After Trust." Any Lawyer should take this case. The way I see it you are owed for the car, Lawyer fees, plus court cost and any expenses you have had in relation to this car deal gone bad.

I say, "Lawyer Up!"

Hey Harry, I have been paying my dad $280 a month for almost 2 years now and will pay the truck off in February. I got into an argument with him and now he is threatening to take the truck from me since legally it is his. I have nearly paid the truck off and have kept it fully insured under my name this whole time. I don't want to loose the truck since I am a single mother and have no other way around or money to get a new one. Is there anything legally linking me to this truck so I can keep it and pay him off and put in my name or can he just take two years of payments and my only source of transportation from me and my son? Sounds like your "Dear Ole Dad" has got you. Let this be a lesson to never ever do business with a relative.

I think your only option is to pressure 'Dear Ole Dad" to produce a title in your name for the truck and hope that he is the type of Dad that is loving and caring .

Sounds to me that if he demands the truck you will have no choice but to turn it over!

Of course you could take the scum-bag to court. I hope that you made your payments with checks to prove you actually did make the payments to him. A low-life like this could deny that you ever paid a penny.

Redefined: The 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback SEL

It had been sometime since we had the chance to experience a Ford Focus. This week the 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback SEL found its way to the Car Concerns Radio Proving Grounds and proceeded to amaze. After driving this offering from the Ford Motor Company we had to rethink the way that we had thought of this compact vehicle.

You could feel that this was not the Ford Focus of yesterday but a more redefined offering.

For Ford the 5-door SEL hatch represents a 'global performance car' that can compete with any vehicle in its class.

The 2012 Ford Focus sedan measures 178.5 inches long, 71.8 inches wide with mirrors extended and 57.7 inches high. The five-door hatchback is slightly shorter, at 171.6 inches, but the other external measurements are identical. Both models share a wheelbase of 104.3 inches. Our 2012 Focus SEL had 17' Alloy polished wheels.

Inside the interior has a new feel and design. The driver and front-seat passenger in the sedan and hatchback models have 38.3 inches of headroom and 41.9 inches of legroom. Rear passengers get 33.2 inches of legroom in both models. Rear sedan passengers have 38 inches of headroom, while passengers in the five-door hatchback get 37.9 inches.

For the power-plant Ford put a 2-liter, four-cylinder, direct fuel-injected aluminum engine gives the Focus 160 horsepower. A PZEV, or Partially Zero-Emission Vehicle, engine will be available in some states, but as of November 2010, complete specifications are not available for that engine, though its displacement, or size, is identical to the standard Focus engine.

Our Ford Focus can be equipped with a six-speed Power-Shift automatic transmission but a five-speed manual is available. Power-Shift is a transmission system trademarked by Ford and intended to deliver smooth and responsive shifting while maximizing fuel efficiency. Some models will also offer push-button shifting.

The front suspension will consist of independent struts connected by a hollow stabilizer bar, while rear suspension comes from Ford's 'Control Blade' suspension system, which Ford states reduces noise and provides better control. The front and rear wheels all use hydraulic gas-pressurized shocks. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering turns the car, and some models are equipped with a tandem of front disc and rear drum brakes while others come with four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes.

Red Light & Speed Trap Cams Zap American Motorist

Washington, DC – The following is the statement of U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-TN), Highways and Transit Subcommittee Ranking Member, from today’s hearing – which Rep. Duncan requested – on the utilization and impacts of automated traffic enforcement, specifically red light and speed cameras:“I can assure you that you can never satisfy government’s appetite for more money or land. The last decade has seen a technology boom that has awarded government new ways to take more money from the taxpayer. Already, governments on all levels are taking about 40 percent of the average citizen’s income and government will continue to look for new ways to nickel and dime the taxpayer to death.

"Red light and speed cameras are popping up all over the Country. In 2008, $3.1 million in red light camera violations were issued in the City of Knoxville. Knoxville received $1.1 million, while the vendor received $2 million. Redflex, the company that operates the red light cameras in Knoxville, is an Australian company, so most of this revenue is going to foreign markets. Three of the largest photo enforcement vendors declined to testify."

“Recently, the State of Florida passed legislation allowing the use of red light cameras and they expect annual revenue generated by these cameras to be $200 million by 2013. These large dollar amounts tell me that this issue is more about raising revenue than making our nation’s roads safer.“While there have been a variety of studies that tout photo enforcement as a cost effective way of improving safety, there are other studies that show an increase in vehicle crashes after red light cameras were installed.

“The Washington Post analyzed a District of Columbia database generated from accident reports filed by police. Since the cameras were installed, the analysis shows that the number of crashes at locations with cameras more than doubled, from 365 collisions in 1998 to 755 in 2004. Injury and fatal crashes climbed 81 percent, from 144 such wrecks to 262.“Another such study, conducted by the Virginia Transportation Research Council, found a reduction in red light running crashes after red light cameras were installed but an overall increase in crashes and injuries due to more rear-end crashes.

“Some states and localities may be too quick to install photo enforcement techniques without first exhausting other techniques that can reduce red light running and improve safety. Improving sign visibility, installing advance warning flashers and adjusting yellow light intervals can have a positive impact. Numerous studies have found that longer yellow signal timing can reduce the frequency of red light running violations by as much as 50 percent.

“While these solutions may not fill government coffers as much as photo enforcement could, we owe it to our taxpayers to explore these engineering improvements that make our roads and highways safer. “If these cameras are really about safety, then let those who are fined donate these fines to private charities where the money will do far more good. In a column I once read, William Raspberry wrote about how private charities spend on average about 85 percent of their funds on their beneficiaries and about 15 percent on administrative costs, while with government welfare programs the opposite is true – about 85 percent is spent on administrative costs and salaries, and only 15 percent goes to the beneficiaries.“I look forward to hearing from our witnesses."

This 2011 Dodge Charger Rallye has a larger grille and restyled headlights on the front. Also some new exterior changes also includes tighter tire to fender clearance as well as LED taillights. Returning this year in SE as well as a rear-wheel and all-wheel drive R/T trims, the 2011 Dodge Charger rides on an improved suspension system. With 17-inch cast aluminum wheels standard on the SE version of the Dodge Charger. Wheel sizes up to 20 inches is available from the factory. Capless fuel filler, aluminum hood and automatic headlamps are exterior features of notice found on the 2011 Charger. Inside of the 5-passenger cabin, a new 8.4-inch touchscreen operates on the main control of audio and climate controls through the 2011 Dodge Charger's standard Uconnect Touch. A Garmin navigation system is optional on both SE and R/T models. Instead of the four engines the 2010 model offered, only half that number is presented on the 2011 Dodge Charger led by the newly-added 3.6 liter Pentastar V-6 engine. While the Pentastar V-6 delivers 292 horsepower, a 5.7 liter HEMI V-8 generating 370 horsepower. Not available for 2011 is the larger HEMI V-8 engine as the high-performance Charger SRT8 trim is taking at least this year off from the sedan.

Looting Trillion's of Dollars in OPEC Profits

We have enough anger towards OPEC, the trillion dollars they'll make this year from oil exports takes our anger to a whole new level.

Did we honestly expect OPEC to raise production?

With price hawks like Iran and Venezuela struggling to maintain output, it's not a hard case to make for them.

After all, oil is money and in this case, a whole lot of money.

According to the EIA, oil export revenues for OPEC members could reach a trillion dollars this year, rising to $1.17 trillion in 2012.

Revenues last year totaled $778 billion, which was a 35% increase over 2009.

Perhaps their trillion-dollar racket shouldn't come as too much of a shock. After all, we've watched oil prices rise more than 200% within the last two and a half years.

Besides, if a member really wanted to increase output, there's certainly nothing stopping them. Cheating on their quotas has become so commonplace; was it really necessary for the Saudis' dramatic announcement that they would raise output regardless?

The Saudi production increase, like everything else dealing with OPEC, comes with a catch...

The Saudis' Sour Crude Supply

Even though Libya's production has fallen from 1.7 million bbls/d to a mere 200,000 bbls/d, the Saudis capacity that will help make up the difference isn't exactly the same.

Libya's production is light, sweet crude with an American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity of about 380. The API gravity tells us how heavy or light the oil is compared to water.

Typically, having an API gravity greater than 10 means the petroleum is lighter and floats on water. Light crude oil has an API gravity higher than 31.10.

The problem is the Saudis' additional production is heavier, meaning most of the European and Asian refineries cannot process it.

And it doesn't get much better for future Saudi production, either.

Their Manifa oilfield, which is expected to reach 900,000 barrels per day by 2014, is also a heavy crude.

Over the next decade, however, OPEC will be losing a good chunk of our change, especially now that we're lowering our dependence on Middle East oil. We currently import approximately 4.5 million barrels every day, or about 40% of our total oil imports, from the OPEC cartel.

Unfortunately, there are very few places we can look to replace that Middle East oil with only one, in particular, holding any great promise.

That country is sitting on 174 billion barrels of crude.

Canadian Shale Oil Opportunities

According to the IEA's Medium-Term Oil and Gas Markets report, Canadian production is projected to reach 4.7 million barrels per day within the next five years.
And it's not surprising where the report is expecting to see that increase: North America is now seen as the strongest-growing non-OPEC region... upward revisions to U.S. onshore crude from tight oil formations.

This is on top of higher expectations from Canadian natural gas liquids (NGLs) and oil sands production.

Now let's add some more perspective on this future growth.
North Dakota is one of the few places in the United States that can increase production. In March 2011, the state broke its own oil production record, pumping out 359,589 barrels per day. State officials are now expecting production to double to more than 700,000 bbls/d during the next decade.

If that forecast becomes reality, North Dakota will then become our second-largest oil producing state.

Not too shabby, right?

In Alberta, just one oil sands producer is expecting to increase its production as much as 500,000 bbls/d over the next decade.. The way production is falling in California and Alaska – currently our second and third largest oil-producing states – would mean our Hot Stock Pick might be ranked third on the list.

Interestingly, these institutional Canadian companies are exactly where we will see the largest growth in oil sands production.

In other words, oil sands production will make up nearly 80% of all Canadian oil production.

A recent oil sands report by the Royal Society of Canada sheds even more light on the matter, too. Although production from surface mining operations is expected to double between 2008-2018, production will likely increase threefold and make up approximately one-half of total bitumen production.

Going forward, that gap will continue to widen.

Let's Drive! The 2011 Mini-Cooper Countryman S

What a fun-time we had with the 2011 Mini-Cooper Countryman S at the Car Concerns Radio Proving Grounds this week!

The Countryman is the Mini-Cooper at the max, and the first with four side doors and optional all-wheel drive. It has a real volume of space and fits four adults with ease. The 2011 Mini-Cooper Countryman S has substantially more cargo volume than other Minis. Yet the Countryman retains the look and fuel economy that have established Mini as a premium go-to brand among small cars and their growing fan base. It for the most part, retains what Mini likes to call go-kart handling.

The grille of the Countryman's is more upright than that on other Mini models. With big and oblong, the headlight clusters that standout on this Countryman rather than classic Mini round, with two pipes for main beams and a ring of LED elements that serve as daytime running lights. This Countryman's front bumper has ducts in the corners under the bumper that direct airflow to cool the front brakes.

The Countryman side view features what Mini designers call a helmet roof. It's less flat and more domed than that on other Mini models. The Mini Cooper Countryman will offer wheels ranging from 16 to 19 inches in diameter. Its rear hatch is bigger than that on other Minis, and it opens higher. This 2011 Countryman is unique in the Mini line, but it absolutely will not be mistaken for any other brand on the road. The 2011 Mini Cooper Countryman commands respect!

The Countryman's gauges and switches will look familiar to current Mini owners. With larger door openings, the 2011 Mini Cooper Countryman S is accessible to climb into, and its front seat bottoms are nearly three inches higher than those in other Mini models. That makes for a more confident view outward. The passenger cabin is truly an automotive engineering marvel.

The Countryman's rear seat is the largest difference in 2011. Each side slides fore and aft by up to 5.1 inches, allowing the Countryman's operator to maximize either rear-passenger or cargo space. With the seats moved back to maximum depth, there's plenty of head and leg room for rear passengers six feet tall, and still 12.4 cubic feet of cargo space (about the same as the trunk in the typical subcompact sedan). With the rear seats folded, the Countryman's cargo volume increases to 41.3 cubic feet, and that space is assessable through both the rear side doors and the hatch.

Like other Mini models, the Countryman is offered in two basic trim levels, and with the same engines. And those engines will be upgraded across the line for 2011. Improvements to Mini's 1.6-liter four-cylinder include new accessories that draw less power from the engine to improve fuel economy, and Valvtronic variable valve timing rocks!

The Mini's Centre Rail storage and fastening system is a standard feature on all Countryman models. Centre Rail is two aluminum rails running lengthwise through the middle of the interior in place of a conventional center console. Various devices, such as cup-holders, storage boxes, trays or armrests can be mounted and locked anywhere along the rails to the driver or passengers' preference. Options will include audio upgrades, a navigation system, a large panoramic sunroof and adaptive xenon headlights.

The first Countryman models have reached select U.S. dealerships, with the national pipeline filling by the spring selling season. Car Concerns Radio would guess that the base model will start at about $25,000. The Countryman S will add $3,000-$4,000 to the base price, with ALL4 all-wheel-drive adding another $1,800-$2,000. Loaded, and fitted with some of Mini's customizable features, the Countryman's should easily stretch into the $30,000 to $35,000 range.

The 2011 Countryman's ALL4 sends 100 percent of drive torque to the front wheels until it detects slip, whereupon the electronically controlled center couple sends torque rearward. It's not a high-speed system, though, and it shuts down at freeway speeds (140 km/h, or 87 mph).

Customization options include exterior graphics and paint combinations and special interior colors, upholstery and trim.

Like the V-8 version, the 740Li uses a six-speed automatic transmission that provides smooth upshifts and very responsive downshifts as well as a Sport mode.

The 2011 Camaro RS convertible gets additional body bracing to make up for the structural rigidity. Its canvass soft top has an acoustical liner and a glass rear window with a defogger; it comes in tan or black. Power operation is standard and involves the release of an overhead lever and the press of a single button, which also lowers the side windows.

Like the 2011 Camaro coupe, the 2011 Camaro convertible seats four, though it has a smaller trunk. Neither trunk is voluminous, with the coupe's at 11.3 cubic feet and the convertible's at 10.2 cubic feet with the top. That shrinks to just 7.9 cubic feet with the top lowered because it folds into the forward portion of the cargo hold. A flexible tonneau cover is standard or optional, depending on the convertible trim line. And an accessory windscreen is available from Chevy dealers. Designed to stop backdrafts with the top town, the windscreen occupies space over the rear seat, rendering it inaccessible to passengers and turning the Camaro convertible into a two-seater.

By the time the 2011 Volvo S60 reaches the U.S. this summer, Volvo might be Chinese, Swedish, American or none of the above. This car could be a final fling for Ford, a brave new dawn for the Chinese Geely or the last gasp of a Swedish giant.

But whoever wins the paternity suit will look to the 2011 Volvo S60 T6 AWD as the car to reestablish Volvo as a genuine, premium alternative to the German Big Three. Quirky and emotive, the 2011 Volvo S60 T6 AWD is targeted squarely at the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class.

In Europe, the 2011 Volvo S60 will be offered with a broad range of engines, but only the Volvo S60 T6 AWD will be crossing the pond. Equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 and all-wheel drive, it will battle the BMW 335i for a piece of the market.

It's a lot to ask. Volvo is already in a fight for its life, and now it finds itself going up against the automotive equivalent of President Obama winning a second term.

COBO CENTER REINVENTED

The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority recently announced dramatic changes to Cobo Center in Detroit, home of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Construction is already underway on the $221 million project, and while many of the renovations will be ready for the 2012 NAIAS and 2013 NAIAS, all improvements will be completed for the 2014 show.

At a recent press conference, the Cobo Authority unveiled a virtual tour of the conceptualized, completed convention facility. Click on the following link to see the dramatic facility enhancements and architectural changes, including a new three-story atrium, new meeting rooms and ballrooms that will open up to stunning views of the Detroit River.

The 2011 Acura MDX SUV features a new V6 engine and the versatility and performance that one expects from Honda’s luxury brand.

The standard Acura MDX sports a 3.7 liter, 300 horsepower V6 engine with 270 lbs of torque and a Drive-by-Wire throttle control. The EPA estimated fuel mileage is 16 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined. The new throttle system and the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) provide excellent acceleration and vehicle control. The six speed automatic transmission is equipped with Shift Hold Control, Grade Logic and Sequential SportShift paddle shifters.

Interior Features

Entertainment features include the Acura Premium Audio System with seven speakers delivering 253 watts of power. XM Radio provides 1700 digital channels although this requires a monthly subscription after a 90-day free trial. Other audio systems include a 6-disc CD player and speed-specific volume control that compensates for audio gain. The optional Acura/ELS Surround Sound system was designed by Grammy award winning producer Elliot Scheiner and features state-of-the-art audio technology.

A USB socket allows you to plug in Apple’s iPod and other USB devices using MP3, WMA and AAC music formats. A Song by Voice feature allows the user to select music from the iPod or hard drive through voice commands.

Exterior Features

The handsomely styled exterior is complemented by an attractive and comfortable interior with nice illumination features. The steering wheel is tilt adjustable with power steering and cruise control. The audio and cruise controls are located on the steering wheel. The automatic climate control system links to the Acura Navigation System’s GPS receiver to provide continuous information on the orientation of the vehicle relative to the sun. The GPS data together with a solar sensor that provides intensity information allow the climate control system to compensate for heating in areas exposed to direct sunlight.

Windows and the moonroof are power-controlled and both will continue to operate for 10 minutes after the ignition is turned off, or after the front doors are opened.

Performance

Honda has not confirmed any changes under the hood for the 2011 Acura MDX. However, the automaker has said that it would like to offer a fuel-efficient diesel V6 engine option in the MDX for either the 2011 or 2012 model years. Should the MDX offer a diesel option for 2011, buyers can expect radically improved fuel economy. Changes to the existing 3.7-liter, 300-hp V6 are unlikely for the coming year. We’ll know more about the performance, braking, and handling of the 2011 Acura MDX once we conduct an official road test.
Road Test

Early road testing of the new Acura MDX indicates that this luxury SUV has good acceleration on the highway, and that the powerful engine responds well to driver control. The vehicle comes with a four-year 50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty with six years of coverage on the powertrain and full vehicle life roadside assistance.
Summary

The positives, there is so much to be said about the 2011 Acura MDX from its superb performance to its exceptional entertainment features. Few vehicles stand out so clearly from their competitors. The technology level on the MDX is truly state of the art, but that hardly seems reflected in the price tag. If there is a drawback, it may be that the MDX does not look quite as impressive as it should for such an outstanding vehicle.

Drivers would be hard pressed to find a finer luxury SUV than the 2011 Acura MDX, which offers so much to like in a single vehicle.

2011 Infiniti G37 Sudan Journey Has Got...IT!

The Car Concerns Radio Proving Grounds receives vehicles from all of the Automobile Manufactures of the World. Some just stick-out and rise above the others.

Infiniti has given the sporty G37 Sudan Journey a mid-cycle refresh for the latest model year, including cosmetic changes to the front and rear fascias, following an update to the interior for the previous model year.

For the 2011 G37 stems from an upgraded edition of Nissan's VQ-series dual-cam V6, keyed to an electronically controlled drive-by-wire throttle. It employs a high-tech valve controller, VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift), and revs all the way to 7600 rpm. At 7000 revolutions, peak power of 328-hp is made, with torque rising to 269 ft-lbs at 5200 rpm.

The G37 supports two transmissions, an incredibly quick shifting seven-speed electronically controlled automatic featuring downshift rev matching (DRM) and manual shift mode (via paddle shifters on the steering wheel), or a six-speed close-ratio manual stick planted on the center console.

Three of the four trim versions of G37 stock the automatic shifter. The three are labeled as a leather-lined base edition G37 sedan, the G37 Journey and the G37x AWD Sedan Sport. A version packing the manual transmission is the G37 Sport M6 Sedan.

Fuel economy for the powerful V6 is reasonably good, with a rating of 19/27-mpg (city/highway) for automatic RWD models and 18/25-mpg for AWD versions. Our manual transmission tester, while plenty of fun, delivers the worst fuel economy of the bunch at 17/25-mpg.

HERE'S A SUDAN WITH SPORTS CAR HANDLING

The G37's platform features front wheels mounted way forward with the engine positioned so that its center of gravity falls behind the front axles. This placement results in a weight distribution biased slightly in favor of front wheels.

Add acceleration out of the curve and the near-perfect weight-balance become obvious, enabling the aggressive driver to carve one corner after another with keen confidence; which is the way we work it on serpentine Engineers Road, testing the limits of tire adhesion.

Steering, through a quick-to-respond rack and pinion mechanism, feels firm despite the assist from a vehicle-speed-sensitive power boost, while competent factory brakes on most models are upgraded on our six-speed test-car, with powerful 4-piston calipers up front delivering impressive stopping power.

All G37 models carry Infiniti's vehicle dynamic control (VDC) device, which automatically checks lateral skidding on slippery pavement.

Our 2011 Buick Lacarosse has a 2.4 Liter DOHC engine with plenty of power and delivers upto 30 MPG when cruising down the highway.

For the future, the LaCrosse will remain the flagship of the Buick lineup, so at first look, it might seem strange that General Motors is adding a seemingly modest inline-four cylinder engine to the sedan's powertrain list. However, at the time the LaCrosse was being developed in 2007-2008, gasoline prices in the United States had spiked to their highest levels ever, topping $4 per gallon. General Motors product planners were understandably working on the assumption that fuel prices would remain high and continue an upward trend in the coming years.

They got that right!

Buick officials won't say so out-right, another factor that likely played into the decision to offer the 2.4-liter EcoTec four-cylinder engine was the underwhelming response to the new 3.0-liter direct injected V6. While the new smaller V6 is a smooth runner and produces similar power to the company's earlier 3.6-liter port injected V6, it was lacking in torque compared to its larger counterpart and actually got slightly inferior fuel economy. We recently had the chance to sample the new four-cylinder-powered LaCrosse CX in rural Tennessee. At the Car Concerns Radio Proving Grounds we found out that less is indeed more when it comes to Buick's handsome sedan.

Buick is a premium brand trying to compete with the likes of Lexus and Acura, refinement remains paramount. The LaCrosse has generally been praised for its quiet and roomy interior and high level of fit and finish. The obvious concern is that a more peppy four-cylinder could disrupt the serenity that buyers in this segment are likely to prefer. While the DI EcoTec isn't necessarily the most powerful engine in its class (the Hyundai Sonata tops it by 18 horsepower) it is a smooth runner and EcoTec.

Previous port injected versions of the Family Two EcoTec (the larger 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4-liter variants) had used a lost foam casting process for the aluminum cylinder block. Lost foam castings are dimensionally accurate and well suited to complex parts like engine blocks. However, the resulting casting can be less dense, and when General Motors pioneered the process in the late-1980s for the original Saturn engines, it had issues with porosity. Those problems were eventually overcome, but newer direct injected engines have higher internal pressures and there have often been complaints about the ticking sound produced by the injectors on other DI engines.

the direct injected EcoTec block is instead produced with a precision sand-casting process. The resulting part is more rigid and transmits less of the injector and combustion noise, allowing it to run quieter. On the outside of the engine, the engineers have also covered the high pressure fuel pump and injector rail with a high density foam as a noise abatement measure. Along with the variable valve timing, the 2.4 produces the same 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque as it does in the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain.

Buick started producing four-cylinder LaCrosses at the Fairfax Kansas assembly plant, and for the remainder of the 2010 model year, the I4 will only be available in the base CX model. When 2011 models are launched this summer, however, the engine's availability will be expanded to the mid-level CXL. Our CX tester was equipped with the fabric upholstery that looks like some sort of modern micro-fiber that ought to wear well over time. Leather surfaces aren't available in the CX, so if you want a four-cylinder LaCrosse with hide-covered thrones, you'll have to wait for the CXL this fall.

2012 Ford Focus Electric

Ford just showed the Focus Electric at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show. Unlike the Nissan Leaf, the all-electric Ford is based on a gasoline powered car. The Focus EV will charge up quicker than a Leaf and has a little extra power too. The Focus EV's 6.6kW on-board charger has twice the capacity of the Leaf's. The Focus EV has a top speed of 84 mph, delivers 123 hp and includes tons of standard features like 17 inch wheels, MyFord Touch, Sat nav, and four wheel disc brakes. Ford hasn't confirmed range but did say it's about 100 miles, like the Nissan Leaf.

The 2012 Ford Focus Electric should be available by early next year.

The LR4 receives some minor changes for 2011 after replacing the LR3 last year. A Contender For The Car Concerns 2011 Car Of The Year...The 2011 Buick Regal CXL

A sport sedan is something of an aspirational purchase. It’s a car you might have to wait for while you toil away behind the wheel of cars you tolerate rather than treasure.

Among the automakers trying to edge into the sport sedan segment is Buick. While you wouldn’t expect it, the full-size LaCrosse is a very respectable attempt to do so by a company better known for catering to the motoring needs of elders, not enthusiasts.
Round Two in Buick’s attempt to burn away that stodgy image is the mid-sized Regal, a resurrection of a name last seen in 2004, before it and its Century twin were displaced by the Allure (the first-generation LaCrosse in the United States). The Regal is ground-up new, based heavily on (and in terms of styling, differing little from) the Opel Insignia, built in Germany by GM’s European division. (Future Regals will be built in Oshawa, Ontario starting in early 2011.)

It seems like an easy win, right? Europe practically invented the sport sedan as we know it, so why shouldn’t a German-built car be one right out of the box? Unfortunately, it’s not that simple.

While the Opel Insignia is available with a range of engines, there are just two offered in the Regal. The highlight is a 2.0-litre Ecotec turbocharged four-cylinder, good for 220 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the CXL Turbo model, set to join the line-up this fall. The base engine, and the one in my CXL tester, is GM’s “other” Ecotec motor, a 2.4-litre four-cylinder making a more modest 182 hp and 172 lb-ft. The 2.4-litre motor comes standard with GM’s Hydra-Matic 6T45 six-speed automatic, while the turbo mill is paired with a six-speed manual and gets the Hydra-Matic as the upgrade.

The chassis is the most impressive aspect of the Regal’s on-road character. Here, its European roots show through with a firm-but-comfortable ride and handling that surprises given the Buick nameplate. Even in the relatively basic trim of my tester, the Regal corners eagerly, responding to the steering wheel with the kind of enthusiasm you’d never expect in any GM sedan short of a Cadillac CTS.

The Regal’s overall feel falls short of its European-branded competitors though; a Mercedes C-Class feels more solid over rough pavement, and the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 will out-handle it at the limit. For the casual driver who enjoys a spirited spin down a favourite two-lane highway or carrying a little more speed than usual through a freeway ramp, the Regal is a satisfying drive. Despite its comfortable ride, the Regal feels very well-planted at high speeds and is a terrific highway car. There are aspects that could be better, such as the overboosted steering, which will be a letdown for anyone who’s driven a decent European car, but brake feel is more impressive, with a firm pedal and confident stopping power. All of this is without the Turbo car’s available Interactive Drive Control system, which allows a choice of three modes that alter things like suspension and stability control settings, throttle response, steering sensitivity and transmission shift patterns.

Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption estimates for the non-turbo Regal are 10.8/6.5 L/100 km (city/highway); I averaged 10.4 L/100 km in a week that was split roughly 50/50 between city slogging and highway cruising.

The Regal’s interior is snug, but no more than expected, and even taller drivers should have no trouble getting comfortable. Shoppers looking at the Regal for a possible upscale family sedan might be turned off by the tight back seat; in Europe, the Opel Insignia is considered a mid-sized car, but here it’s much smaller than mainstreamers like the Accord, Camry, Sonata and Malibu, and noticeably tighter inside than its LaCrosse line-mate.

The sleek rearward roofline has the double-barrelled effect of cutting into rear-seat headroom and making it easy to whack your head on the doorframe while getting in and out. More impressive is the large, nicely-finished trunk, along with a 60/40 folding rear seat that opens up to a sizable pass-through for oversized cargo.

The Regal’s dash is lifted more or less intact from the Insignia, and while the layout is simple and easy to figure out, the flat black plastic of the centre stack looks low-rent, with just some piano black trim to break up the all-black dash. The are a few other curiosities, such as the ill-fitting blank panel in the headliner that looks like it should be a sunglass holder, but isn’t, and the cover for the console storage bin that’s cut away to make room for cupholders, making it marginal as an elbow rest for the driver and useless as such for a front passenger.

Regal pricing starts at $31,990; my tester included a Preferred Equipment Group that added a 12-way power passenger seat with four-way power lumbar adjustment, rear park assist, rear-seat power outlet and a power sunroof for an extra $2,525; add the $1,450 destination charge and the total comes to $36,065.

The Regal’s price isn’t unreasonable. What is unreasonable is Buick’s expectation that the base model will be taken seriously by anyone in the market for a sporty car. The chassis is very good, but GM let its marketers get ahead of the engineers here; the team behind this car should have given more thought to what powertrain it would use in this base model before it started throwing the term “sport sedan” around.

It's A 2011 Nissan Versa SL 1.8 & It Rocks!

The 2011 Nissan Versa SL from Nissan won't let you get sucked-in by the high price of gasoline and will get you around town or on a long trip in style.

Weather we had the 2011 Nissan Versa SL at the Car Concerns Radio Proving Grounds or out for a spin on the open road one thing was for sure is that this was indeed a vehicle that could achive almost 30 MPG and do it without the cramping the passengers.

The interior was inline with a car with this price tag but non-the-less appealing. Our Versa SL had a Xtronic CVT 6 speed automatic transmission that enabled the 1.8L DOCH engine to produce 122 horses & 127 lb-ft. of Torque.

This Versa Sl was also a Ultra Low Emmissions Vehicle (ULEV) and that made you proud to be doing your part towards leaving a smaller envio foot-print while driving.

This 2011 Nissan Versa SL fills our needs very well. Available in both sedan and five-door hatchback body styles, the Versa offers a surprising amount of interior space inside of its small, unassuming exterior. The 2010 version was named a "Best Buy" by Consumer's Digest, and a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In basic sedan form, it's pretty sporty, but the up-level sedan and hatchback models not only offer all you really need in the way of comfort, performance, and safety, they can be had with nearly all of the convenience options that were restricted to the luxury class not too long ago. The 2011 Versa 1.8 SL Hatchback could be "all you want" as well as "all you need". It's that good!

2011 Nissan Quest

Nissan's 2011 Quest minivan is somewhat of a reversal for Nissan. The previous Quest was sort the minivan for those who would rather not have a minivan, the new Quest is more like the ultimate, typical minvan - boxy, functional and luxurious.

The 2011 Quest is availble in four trim levels - S, SV, SL and luxury LE. The base S model is about $28,000 but even that version includes remote keyless entry and push button start and a 260 hp, 3.5L V6. The top of the line LE model is priced at about $42,000 and includes a 13-speaker Bose sound system, navigation, rear parking camera and 18-inch wheels. But you don't have to pay for the LE to get a decent amount of luxury. The $35,000 SL still includes heated leather seats plus a color display screen for audio and vehicle stats. All Quest minivans get the same 3.5L engine and CVT- there's no four cylinder version like the base Toyota Sienna.

There is a noticable difference in driving dynamic between vans like the Honda Odyssey and the Nissan Quest. The Honda feels tighter and a little sportier - is that a good thing in a minivan? Maybe not, it just depends on the buyer. The Nissan Quest feels like a plusher, more luxurious van overall. The interior of the Nissan is more inviting and that soft ride works very well on the highway and surface streets.

Toyota's new Sienna is clearly in the game too - for 2011 the three best minivans are all new. Honda, Nissan and Toyota each have an all new van and the Kia Sedona is due for an update. It's hard to say which is the best, all three are so good the choice likely comes down to personal taste.

At The Nashville International Auto Show: 2011 Nissan Leaf

Harry and the Car Concerns Road Crew was all-over the Nashville International Automobile Show this Thanksgiving weekend.

Jessica Cox, Actress and Model, reports on the all-electric Nissan Leaf for Car Concerns Radio.

"Just as leaves purify the air in nature, so Nissan Leaf purifies mobility by taking emissions out of the driving experience," the company said.

The five-seat, electric-blue Leaf hatchback is to be launched in select U.S. and Japanese markets to begin what Nissan hopes will become an era of global leadership for the company in a growing EV market.

Leadership shouldn't be evasive if the Leaf lives up to its performance billing. A top speed of 90 mph, a range of 100 miles per charge with a 30-minute recharge where quick-charging stations are available (6 hours with a 220-volt current) and seat cushion-compressing acceleration that will launch it from zero to 30 mph faster than an Infiniti G37, thanks to 207 pound-feet of torque from its 80 kilowatt (107 horsepower) electric motor are all part of the package.

To the degree that price matters, Nissan's also got a big edge in the EV world. Pricing hasn't been announced, but the company insists the Leaf will be "affordable" with pricing equivalent to a well-equipped C-class (compact) car.

That's a European compact, though, and they're a lot better equipped, and more costly, than compacts in the U.S. so figure $28,000 to as much as $35,000 (the range for Nissan partner Renault's Megane hatchback) — not super cheap, but a bit less than the five-place Chevy Volt.

And that's before any government incentives — which could knock a substantial amount from the car's price in Japan and would be at least $7,500 in the U.S. as long as funding continues for the federal clean car credit program.

2010 Los Angeles Auto Show - Jaguar C X75

This is the sweetest looking EV ever! The Jaguar C X75 has four 195hp electric motors pumping out a total of 780hp. Plug it in and charge up the lithium-ion batteries. Battery only range is 68 miles.

The C-X75 also has two 96hp micro gas turbines, to recharge the batteries once you run out of plug in juice. The small turbine engines can run on gasoline, ethanol, diesel - total range is 560 miles.

For years the Santa Monica based Coda has been promising a highway capable all-electric car but so for they've got nothin'.

Coda's first appearance at the LA Auto Show may indicate they're more serious but the company still has a few major hurdles to clear. For one, the price of the Coda Sedan is about $45,000. Yes, you can get Fed tax credits but that still makes it more expensive than a Nissan Leaf, Honda Fit Electric and Chevy Volt. Will anyone want to pay that much for a car that looks like a re-badged compact from China? Not sure about this one...

2010 Los Angeles Auto Show - Lexus CT 200h

It's easy to fault Toyota and Lexus for not having pure electric vehicles yet but when it comes to hybrids, there's no equal. Add the CT 200h to the growing list of Lexus' luxury hybrid fleet.

However, the CT 200h is a compact. It looks more substatial in pictures but really is has less useable interio space than a Nissan Leaf.

Under the hood is a gasoline engine combined with an electric motor making 134 hp - estimated mpg is 42.

The 2011 Sentra also gains new options packages. Still, Nissan has a great offering for the economically minded.

As this 2011 Nissan Sentra SL was surprising at how close the Sentra was to the Altima in many dimensions, and shopping for a sedan in a Nissan showroom gets even more complicated when considering the Sentra's downmarket sibling, the Versa. The so-called B-segment Versa is a big boy in-and-of-itself, just three inches shorter and slightly narrower than the Sentra, while coming in (amazingly) one inch taller. Naturally, this causes us to wonder how many Sentra sales are lost to the Versa. Sure the Versa has 55 fewer ponies in 1.8 SL trim, but it's also over 500 pounds lighter, available in both sedan and hatch configurations, and starts at $4,000 fewer bucks to boot.

The Sentra's has good height and long wheelbase conspire to create some unique proportions, the resulting design looks different and narrow sleek lines. On the bright side, our SL tester did have some nice-looking features that differentiate it from its less sporty siblings. For starters, the SL's new 17-inch wheels help give the Sentra's profile some added visual pop. Nissan added are bodyside moldings and a restrained rear wing that lends the slightest amount of sporting pretense.

Well we now know that there was no plan for real change but just more of the same. He has enjoyed the luxury of a Senate and Congress that is controlled by his party, the Democrats. Together they have accomplished nothing that feels like change but only resembles the same old same old.

This Tuesday, November 2, 2010 we as citizens of the United states of America have a chance to exercise our constitutional right to vote and elect the people that we think will best represent our interest and protect our country.

This is an opportunity to bring in the real change that is desperately needed at this time.

As Co-founder of the ever strong American Motorist Vote Campaign I am asking all members to consider what your Congress and Senate representative has done. They are a part of a failing class. We can no longer support their losing ways. To sent them home without punishment is a crime.

On Tuesday lets make a point to "TAKE OUT THE TRASH" and pledge to show more concern about who we let into our house.

2010 Lexus IS 350C

Two parts sports car, one part luxury convertible, the Lexus IS 350 Convertible is the one Lexus that combines the best of sport and luxury. The rear-wheel drive IS convertible is based on the IS sedan so handling is sportier than other Lexus vehicles - it feels more like a BMW 3-Series or Infiniti G37. The 300+ hp six-cylinder engine is powerful and fun, plus it has a nice, subtle exhaust note.

The interior is perhaps a slight step down from more expensive Lexus sedans but the heated and cooled seats are comfortable, materials are high quality and all the features you'd expect in a Lexus are there. The power folding hard top instantly converts the IS from an open top sports car to a smooth and quiet luxury coupe.

In the end the Lexus IS 350C is the perfect car for someone who enjoys driving and seeking out twisty roads but wants to balance that with a comfortable everyday car. The ride is firmer than a Lexus ES but a little more forgiving than that of a BMW.

Here's the problem with reading too many car magazines, they're not speaking to the people who actually buy cars. They're writing to people who wish they owned a Porsche or a BMW and think everything else is terrible, in short, they're writing to themselves. Know-it-alls and loudmouths populate the halls of these long (wrongly) esteemed publications that are lucky if they reach 200,000 people. Of course they go on like they're doing Tonight Show numbers circ 1973 but really they're just living in the past. They hate cars like the Mazda2 - it's underpowered they say, it's got an outdated automatic transmission is another complaint. Really? Seems fine to me.

With 100 hp, the 2011 Mazda2 feels plenty powerful. Is it going to win at Le Mans? No, but it is a fun car to drive that provides both entertaining handling and a high quality interior. The seats are comfortable and the back seat isn't impossible to use. The 2011 Mazda2 is mechanically related to the Ford Fiesta so that good - the Fiesta is probably the best subcompact out there.

At just $16,000 for a nicely equipped Mazda2, I say ignore all the old guys that write and talk too much simply for their own pleasure. Go test drive a Mazda2, it's a well-made little car that will have you re-thinking just how much car you really need.

The 2010 Volvo XC60 Turbo-6 AWD! And We Like It!

It's only logical that at any given point in time there is one vehicle that offers its passengers greater protection than all the others, even if it is not quite possible to determine exactly which one that is.

Nevertheless, anytime the subject has come up in the past half-century or so, you could count on the name Volvo being suggested as a contender, if not the hands-down favorite. So, when the folk (a Swedish word, that) in Gothenburg say they've gone and built "the safest Volvo ever", it's wise to take notice. Not the safest "car", mind you, but the safest "Volvo".

That's partly because the Volvo executives are a polite bunch and don't want to ruffle the competition's feathers too much, but mostly because the 2010 XC60 T6 is a crossover, and not really a car. Nevertheless, they could probably also call it "the best looking Volvo ever" and not hear too many arguments, at least not from me.

The XC60's combination of a windswept wedge profile and shoulders wide enough to land a SAAB fighter jet on are straight off of the auto show floor. Genie bottle taillights are worthy of an exhibit in a design museum, and that doesn't even take into account the small vertical fins they create on either side of the rear window.

The marketing people at Volvo will likely tell you that they are for aerodynamic purposes, but you know there is an exterior designer somewhere with a poster of a 1959 Cadillac on his cubicle wall that grins every time they do.

The interior isn't quite as impressive, but plays to the Volvo faithful. Materials in the 5-passenger cabin are sturdy, rather than elegant. The one highlight is the optional Nordic Light Oak trim on a floating center stack that bends its way from the console to the dashboard in an oh-so-Scandinavian way.

If someone pulls in front of you, it beeps and flashes a red light on the windshield. Get drowsy and start driving erratically and the Volvo will stir you from your impending slumber with a wake-up call. All of these are options, but the marquee feature comes standard.

Called City Safety, it uses a laser mounted behind the windshield to keep an eye on things in front of you in stop and go traffic. If it senses that the vehicle you are following is slowing down, and you haven't done anything to avoid it, it will slam on the brakes on your behalf. Under 19 mph it won't bring the XC60 to a complete stop, but will slow it dramatically to lessen any impact. Under 9 mph it waits until you are about a yard away from calling the insurance company before it runs itself into a virtual wall, stopping in its tracks.

Bodily harm isn't too much of an issue when moving that slowly, but the averted fender bender is appreciated just the same. Unfortunately the owner's manual goes to great lengths to explain that City Safety is not designed to work when confronted with motorcycles, or pedestrians, two things that could really benefit from not getting run down at that speed.

EPA fuel economy rating of 16 mpg in the city, and not much more on the highway, 22 mpg. A 235 hp normally-aspirated version of the XC60 with front-wheel drive is also available for $32,395 and gets 18 mpg city/27 highway, which may be more in sync with the personality of the vehicle.

The less potent engine can also be had with all wheel drive, and both models come with City Safety, but not the leather seats that are standard in the T6. Those will set you back $1,700, meaning the turbocharged version really only costs $1,105 more than the sensible shoes edition, or about $25 bucks per horsepower.

Yes, we spent time with the 2010 Nissan Rogue SV at the Car Concerns Radio Proving Grounds where it scored an A+.

But the leafs were changing into unreal Fall colors on the trees and a minute later we were on a Car Concerns Radio Road Trip which can a novel within itself.

When considering the purchase of a brand new vehicle, it's important to keep in mind what the eventual resale value will be on down the road. 2011 Mini Countryman

This is Mini's newest vehicle. The Cooper Countryman is a little wider, longer and taller than even a Mini Clubman - think of the Countryman as Mini's version of a compact crossover SUV similar to a Toyota RAV4 in function but with tons of sassy Mini style.

The version pictured is a Cooper S Countryman which means it's got a turbocharged, 181 hp engine. There's also an all-wheel drive version and Mini now has a fairly compelling information and entertainment interface called Mini Connected. It's a free app from iTunes but to fully enjoy all it's features you need to opt for the Mini Visual Boost radio - that adds about $1,000 to the price.

The turbo S model is quick and the six-speed manual transmission makes the most of that engine. Handling is decent and very sporty compared to other compact SUVs. Mini says they made all 2011 models quieter but there's still a good deal of road noise on coarse pavement.

Mini’s new Countryman starts at $22,350. The turbocharged Cooper S Countryman is $25,950 and the all-wheel drive Cooper S Countryman All4 starts at $27,650 including destination charge.

Harry will be reviewing and talking about his experience with this 2010 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SV on Car Concerns Radio during the week.

The Maxima comes in two grades: the base S and upscale SV. Power for all grades comes from a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and continuously variable transmission. Standard 18-inch wheels with V-rated tires give the sedan a wide, stable footprint. Four-wheel vented disc brakes with four-channel antilock braking stop the Maxima on a dime.

The Car Concerns Radio test car is the 3.5 SV which retails for $38,660, this including the $720 destination charge. Standard comfort and convenience features include keyless entry and start, leather trim, an eight-way power driver’s seat and four-way power passenger seat, Bluetooth interface, Bose audio system with XM satellite radio, USB connectivity, and a power moonroof.

A sport package on the test car adds a single-panel moonroof, bi-xenon headlamps, heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, heated front seats with driver’s seat memory, a downloadable hard drive and streaming Bluetooth audio.

Drivers need to push the envelope in order to appreciate the Maxima’s performance. Nissan engineering seemed to purposely avoided a sudden throttle take-off in favor of linear acceleration that showcases the engine’s torque.

The sedan excels on winding, two-lane roads and is the Master-of-its-Domain on the Intersate. We test drove this Maxima SV on some sparsely-travelled highways outside of Knoxville, where I could put the sedan’s 290-horsepower engine through its paces.

The location of the shift paddles, just inside the steering wheel, makes them easy to reach. Paddle shifters on the steering wheel allow the driver to manually choose gears. It’s not necessary to push the shift lever into a special setting to engage the manual shift function. The system automatically disengages if the driver neglects to shift before braking.

The 2010 Maxima SV with or without the shift function, the V-6 engine has an impressive amount of low-end power. To test it, we accelerated from a stop on a steep incline at a high altitude. The V-6 engine powers up to a peak torque at 4400 rpm. Since the transmission doesn’t downshift until over 5000 rpm, the car can easily accelerate up to speeds of over 70 miles-per-hour in a matter of seconds.

Front and rear stabilizer bars keep the chassis flat in the corners. The standard four-wheel independent suspension is compliant and really responsive.

The Maxima SV has a low center of gravity that gives it excellent and quick steering response at speed. When the Car Concerns Crew simulated an emergency evasive maneuver, the chassis remained completely stable. The Maxima’s 37.4-foot turning radius is more than adequate for the occasional U-turn.

Visibility around the perimeter of the interior cabin is excellent. The thick rear pillars create some blind areas in back, which the rearview camera compensates for. The interior is quiet enough so that passengers in both rows can converse with ease. The only obvious noise from outside the cabin is a throaty exhaust noted during hard acceleration which we thought appropriate.

Fuel economy is good for the power-plant under the hood, though not exceptional. At the Car Concerns Proving Grounds our 2010 Maxima 3.5 SV averaged 22.2 miles-per-gallon during our week-long evaluation which included a 305 road-trip down I-40.

A six-speed manual transmission sure helps the car feel sporty and the electric assist motor gives decent off the line response. The clincher is probably the car's price - about $20,000 for something this stylish is worth checking out.

If you're thinking this is just like the first Honda Insight, think again. This car makes 122 hp combined - the Insight just 73 from a three cylinder engine. The CR-Z is a compromise for sure but it's a fun compromise, the kind you'll want to make everyday on a back road and the long way to work. Sports car? No. Sport-y car? Yes.

The Subaru Impreza WRX STI was already a highly optimized performance machine. Specific chassis tuning. Aluminum front lower L-arms reduce unsprung vehicle weight. Major chassis tuning changes include a lowered ride height and new pillow-ball bushings in front and stiffer bushings for the rear subframe that supports the double-wishbone suspension - these improve camber and toe stiffness.

Both the front and rear suspension systems employ higher-rate springs and thicker front and rear stabilizer bars than the 2010 model: 21 mm vs. 20 mm in front and 19 mm vs. 18 mm in rear. Spring rates have increased by 15.6 percent in front and 53 percent in the rear.

New standard 18-inch aluminum wheels feature high-luster paint and weigh 17.6 lbs. less than the previous standard wheels. The optional 18 x 8.5-in. BBS® forged aluminum-alloy wheels, which further reduce unsprung vehicle weight, are highlighted by silver high-luster paint for 2011.

Exclusive to the Subaru Impreza WRX STI, the Brembo Performance Brake System uses ventilated 4-wheel Super Sport anti-lock (ABS) disc brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Super Sport ABS can control the braking forces at each rear wheel independently, which optimizes braking ability during hard cornering to help reduce understeer.

The 2011 WRX STI continues as the ultimate-performance Subaru with its high-boost 305-hp turbocharged/intercooled 4-cyl. Boxer engine and 6-speed manual transmission. The STI also features Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with three "Auto" modes, as well as a manual mode with six driver-selectable differential locking settings.

The Subaru Impreza WRX STI is equipped with advanced dynamic control systems, as well: the Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system is standard and features a track performance-optimized mode; Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) technology allows the driver to tailor the car's driving characteristics by choosing from among three selectable modes - "Intelligent," "Sport" and "Sport Sharp" - using a rotary dial on the center console.

2011 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite

A the national press launch of Honda's new 2011 Odyssey minivan, the company made an interesting revelation, they said many previous Odyssey owners were displeased with one aspect of the van. The specific complaint was basically that the van looked too generic. Honda used different words but the bottom line is, even great minivans like the Odyssey don't look dramatically different than the competition. The solution, give the 2011 Odyssey a sharp new look that stands out even in a parking lot full of minivans.

The Z character line that runs down the side of the van is part of Honda's attempt to set the van apart but really, the van's interior is the were the Odyssey shows its true worth. Features like a wide screen DVD player, bright gauges, easy access to the third row and more than ample room in both the second and third row of seating put the Odyssey ahead of the competition in many ways. Opt for the top of the line Touring Elite and the van could very well have an Acura badge on the grille and no one could knock it. The Honday Odyssey is also most fuel efficient minivan in its class.

2011 Volvo C30

I love this car. Many cars are good, some are great but there's a precious few that you really connect with as a driver and the Volvo C30 is one of those.

For 2011, the car's look has been updated a little so the car no longer looks like an S40 coupe, instead it now looks like a standalone sporty hatchback.

Under the hood is a turbocharged, 2.5 liter engine that makes 227 hp. You can get a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic, the one I drove had the automatic. Acceleration is impressive and the transmission delivers quick, firm shifts. After a week's worth of driving I averaged about 22 mpg.

The ride is not overly stiff but still tight enough to deliver some fun. 18-inch wheels with Pirelli tires mean there's plenty of grip. As a sports coupe, the C30 works well but it's also remarkably comfortable. The seats are soft yet supportive and every interior surface looks and feels high quality.

Base price is about $27,000 - not cheap for sure. A nicely equipped Volvo C30 should run roughly $32,000. Compare the C30 to a BMW 135i or and Infiniti G37 Coupe - both are more expensive but are slightly more serious when it comes to aggresive driving.

Still, the 2011 C30 is worth considering for those who want a sport car but don't need a big back seat or four doors.

To create-a-Buzz with the retail automotive consumers, Chrysler Group LLC today released the first teaser pictures of their popular off-roader vehicle.

Coming in the third quarter is the 2011 Jeep Wrangler and the Wrangler Unlimited.

The Jeeps have received new interiors, the Sahara models get a new body-color hardtop, and there are five new colors.

"The iconic Jeep Wrangler keeps getting better," Mike Manley head of the Jeep brand commented.

Among the improvements are a redesigned instrument panel and center stack, more storage areas, lockable console, and better materials and ergonomics, including more comfortable door armrests and more acoustics for a quieter cabin. Buyers can opt for heated power mirrors, and visibility has been improved with larger rear windows.

I've driven the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and I have to be honest, it's nothing like the Nissan Leaf. If both cars were powered by a gasoline engine only, no one would compare them. But because they're both electric cars and are coming out at the same time, many people have made the leap that they must be similar. Both the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Roadster are electric powered but no one is comparing those cars.

Here's a few quick facts on the Volt: It's gas engine never drives the wheels, the gas engine only makes electricity and electricity is all that ever powers the Volt. The Volt is front wheel drive. The Volt is $41,000 but the car does have a decidedly premium feel inside and out compared to, say a Chevy malibu.

The retail price is $41,000 - some people will qualify for an IRS tax credit - not cash back.

The Volt will not qualify for HOV status in Calif.
Some dealers have already said they will mark the car up $5,000.
The Chevrolet Volt is built in the US, including most of the battery pack.
Chevrolet will warranty the batteries for 8 years or 100,000 miles.
Not all Chevy dealers will sell the Volt - high demand areas like California will get the cars first.

And the Volt may be hard to find at any price - only six states will get the car at first, they include California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Washington, D.C. Plus, Chevrolet plans to build just 10,000 Volts for the 2011 model year.

I Knew Jerry Flint!

I will never forget the day in 2003 that I decieded that on my new radio talk show Car Concerns, I would offer my listeners the very best that Automotive Journalism had to offer.

I knew that it would be a long shot for an old New Car Dealer who was starting a radio talk show about anything and everything automotive to capture the likes of World Famous Jerry Flint as my first interview of great car minds.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, I made the call to Forbes Magazine in New York City and demanded to talk to the author of the "Back Seat Driver" column.

I was told to hold and within minutes a raspy, man-sized voice answered, "Jerry Flint." And so began an incredible friendship.

Jerry didn't know who Harry Douglas from Knoxville was from Adam, yet he took my call and spoke to me like we had been the best of colleges for years. I was an instant fan of Jerry Flint style.

Since that day I was one of the lucky ones who could pick-up the phne and dial Jerry direct to his home in New York City or catch up with him at his upstate New York cabin on any given weekend.

I will never forget the time that he did a live Saturday interview with me on Car Concerns Radio while I was at Citadel's WNOX 100.3 News-Talk and Jerry conducted the interview while a Frieght Train made its pass-by. It never interrupted the first word out of his mouth.

It seemed to me like Jerry was always at his typewriter or computer because I would often email Jerry and ask if he could comment on a column that he had just written or what his thoughts were on any given automotive subject matter and he would shoot an email back in amazing time fashion. Often he would be on the show with me the next morning.

I didn't meet Jerry in person until the 2008 North American International Automobile Show in Detroit. The night before the opening of the show I was one of the lucky ones who had got invited to the General Motors "STYLE" show which was star-studded. To me, their was no-bigger celebrity at the event than Jerry Flint.

I'll never forget that Kid Rock was on stage bellting out a tune when I noticed out of the corner of my eye a figure appeared in the doorway with a beautiful woman on his arm. It was umistakeably Jerry Flint. His presence filled this gathering like no other I had ever known. When Jerry Flint walked into the room, one took notice.

It never did me any good to argue with Jerry about any automotive issue. His opinion was always overbearing and would swallow yours up in one gulp. Jerry could have made million had he been a Trial Lawyer. No Jury would ever think for one minute that he might be wrong.

2010 Mazda3 - Proud to be a Compact

On paper, the Mazda3 doesn't seem like anything more than just another decent economy car. The i Touring edition has a 2.0L, 148 hp, inline four cynlinder engine, five speed manual transmisson, 16-inch alloy wheels and few option packages to dress the car up a bit. Opt for the moonroof/Bose package and you get a 10-speaker Bose Centerpoint audio system, 6 CD changer and a moonroof/sunroof. But this is all standard compact car fare - nothing special, right?

And then you drive it. It only takes about 30 seconds behind the wheel to figure out that this is no ordinary economy car.Everything is so precise - the steering, the clutch uptake, the handling all feel as if their components were built with the precision of a Swiss watch or an American rifle. The Mazda3's cabin also remains quiet even on the highway - this is one of main drawbacks to small cars. Even the interior is nicer that competitors like the Ford Focus and Honda Civic.

Fuel economy is 25 city / 33 highway. That's a few ticks below other small cars like the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Kia Forte and the upcoming Chevy Cruze.

The 2010 Mazda3 i Touring has a base price of $17,875 - add a few options like the moonroof package and satellite radio and you're in the $20,000 range. The Kia Forte is one of our favorite small cars and now the Mazda3 is too. Compared to the Forte, the 3 is a little tighter and a little more fun to drive.

The U.S. Congress today approved the broadest overhaul of financial rules since the Great Depression and sent it to President Barack Obama to sign into law. By a vote of 60 to 39, the Senate gave final approval to a sweeping measure that tightens regulations across the financial industry in an effort to avoid a repeat of the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

Auto dealers, after months of lobbying and debate, won a hard-fought exemption from the measure. Obama will likely sign the bill into law next week, the White House said.

But wait, only a few weeks ago the President said in television, to the World, that he would not Sign the Bill into Law unless Car Dealers were included in the Bill. The National Automobile Dealers Association started pouring Millions & Millions into the House. Senator Sam Brownback brought a Bill that would exempt Car Dealers from the Consumer Financial Agency.

The President stated that he wanted all Military Personal protected when they went to purchase a vehicle new or used. Then the President change the color of his skin like a Lizard and says in order to get financial reform on the books and into law he will sign the bill leaving not only our Military Personal to Fend-For-Themselves, but the great American Motorist as well. Mr. President! You Lied!

More Electric Cars Coming - Thanks to the Nissan Leaf

As the reality of the all electric Nissan Leaf draws nearer, expect to see a lot more all-electric vehicles, concepts, drawings and promises. One is the Audi e-tron, and all electric, high performance coupe that looks like a smaller version of the R8 - it's a real car but just not for US buyers. Recently, Audi entered the car in a 100+ mile rally. The e-Tron should be on sale by late 2012 and according Auto Green Magazine 5 percent of Audis sold in 2020 could be electric.

A high performance electric car may seem silly but Mercedes Benz says a battery powered SLS could be a reality and the Tesla Roadster is fairly quick without the help of a gasoline engine. BMW is also working on an all-electric car based on what the company learned from the Mini-e. The luxury hybrid Fisker Karma is also on the way and Tesla promises a four-door, all electric performance sedan. Also look for Mitsubishi's electric i-Mieve and of course the Chevrolet Volt is on its way. No word on a production version of Subaru's electric R1E they showed at the NY Auto Show.

Use good logic and your good sense will tell you that a good, clean used vehicle will serve your purpose for your ground transportation needs and save you the pain of chronic depreciation value that a brand new vehicle offers.

Used vehicles often are the best values retail automotive consumers find in the automotive market place. This is especially true for late-model ones. Not only is the price lower than a comparable new car, but ownership expenses such as collision insurance and taxes are lower, and a used vehicle has already taken its biggest hit in depreciation. In addition, buying used is often a way to get a better-equipped vehicle than you'd be able to afford new.

Buying a used vehicle is an exercise in finding the right balance of value and risk.

One thing that has made used cars more appealing is their improved reliability. In a analysis of Consumer Reports annual subscriber surveys from 1980 through 2000, they found that the reliability of vehicles had vastly improved. Reported problems declined to a fraction of what they were in 1980. Rust and exhaust-system problems, once common, are now no longer a major concern. As a result, buying a late-model used vehicle is not as much of a risk as it used to be. When properly maintained, today's vehicles should easily go well past 100,000 miles, and many could reach 200,000 miles without a major breakdown.

In the first two or three years of a car's life, it has fewer problems and is typically covered by a comprehensive warranty. A used car, on the other hand, is either close to coming off warranty or already off it.

This means that owners will have to pay for repairs out of pocket, but most costs will probably go to replace parts like tires, brakes, or a battery—high-wear items that often aren't covered by a warranty anyway. The expense of replacing all of them, if necessary, would still be relatively modest considering the overall savings from buying a used vehicle.

There is always the chance that you'll buy a lemon. Even a car with a great reliability history can be a risky proposition if it was abused by a previous owner or if previous damage has been hidden. By giving the car a careful inspection yourself and having the vehicle thoroughly inspected by a qualified mechanic, you can usually get a good idea of the car's history and value.

A major disadvantage to buying a new car is the rapid depreciation it undergoes in the first few months. Models typically lose about 55 percent of their value in the first three years, compared with 20 percent over the next three. But this varies greatly among models. The 2006 BMW 3 Series, for example, has held its value relatively well (about 44 percent depreciation over the first three years), while the 2006 Ford Crown Victoria has depreciated rapidly (about 67 percent).

Several factors determine depreciation, including the model's popularity, perceived quality, supply, and whether or not the vehicle is of the current design. The average depreciation on a $27,500 vehicle leaves little more than $15,000 after three years, a huge hit in residual value.

Loans for new cars typically have a lower interest rate, but the difference is often not a major concern. In March 2009 the rates for a 36-month new-car loan was about 6.8 percent. A 36-month used-car loan was about 7.5 percent. These two rates are often within just one percentage point of each other, and the additional interest you pay on a used-car loan adds only about $7 to $15 on a monthly loan payment.

Buying a used car means you won't have the latest safety features. Newer features such as electronic stability control (ESC), head-protecting curtain air bags, LATCH child-seat restraints, and advanced frontal air-bag systems are harder to find on older vehicles. But a vehicle with more common safety features such as anti lock brakes, traction control, and side air bags will be more affordable on a used car than on a similarly equipped new car.

If you can accept a reliable vehicle that is in less-than-mint condition and you're willing to pay for maintenance and repair costs, your dollars will go further when buying a used car rather than a new one.

New Fiat Dealers in the US

According to this article in the NY Times, FIAT will soon be selling cars in the US - The Times says about 200 at first. It's no surprise, really. Access to an established dealership network is one of the best assets Chrysler can offer. Dodge trucks and minivans are also a draw but the ability to sell the FIAT 500 in the US without having to build a chain of dealerships from scratch is invaluable.

It may be worth noting that BMW did something similar with the Mini Cooper (the FIAT 500 is a competitor) and Nissan could do the same with Renault cars - in some ways they already have as the Nissan Versa is a basically a rebadged Renault.

2010 Toyota Matrix Review

Despite Toyota's recent, well-publicized problems the company continues to crank out decent cars. Take this 2010 Toyota Matrix S for example, it's functional, gets decent fuel economy and is a great value. In base trim you'll get a five speed manual transmission and a 1.8 liter engine. The mid-trim S model is about $22,000, that price includes the more powerful 2.4 liter engine (158 hp), a five speed shiftable automatic transmission, fog lights, alloy wheels, rear cargo mat, power windows, remote keyless entry and a single CD player audio system with a satellite ready radio. Cruise control is not on the list and it's the one you'll miss most if you ever do any kind of road trip. All-wheel drive is offered but depending on where you live, may not be a must have on a car that's main selling point is low price and decent mpg.

On the road, the Matrix's ride can be a little busy like any small car but for the most part it remains composed and pleasant. On a two hour car ride consisting mostly of freeways and small back roads the one constant was road noise. It's not unbearable but the Kia Forte is quieter on the open road at highway speeds. The Matrix is basically a Corolla wagon and the extra cargo space the wagon configuration allows is noticable. Weekend luggage for two adults and two small kids fit with no problem. Rear seat room is adequate for a compact - when a friend's kid wanted to ride with our family, sitting three across in the rear seat was no problem in terms of width or legroom but in this case the oldest kid was eight.

The bottom line is this - the 2010 Toyota Matrix is a decent car. It does what it should and no more. It isn't a sports hatch like the Mazda3 but it isn't a penalty box either. Nicely equipped, attractive and spacious enough, the 2010 Toyota Matrix S is everything you'd expect from a value priced Toyota and ultimately that's a good thing, just don't expect too much.
